They say there’s nothing new under the sun. Well, if you’ve ever thought your family would make the perfect cast for a sitcom, chances are Bill Engvall’s already got you beat.
We’re big fans of Engvall here, not only because of his phenomenal wit: this, after all, is the man who’s got us all saying “Here’s your sign.” We also love how very normal he is. Seriously, Engvall’s the type of guy we’d sit down to have a beer with… except we drink martinis, not beer. Even so, he seems like the kind of guy who, when shots of Cuervo started sounding good after that third martini, would probably knock ‘em back right along side us. And then be sober enough to call a cab while covertly checking out our rack.
That pretty much sums up what we most adore about The Bill Engvall Show (premiering June 12 at 9 p.m. EST on TBS): it’s funny, but not filthy. In this day of time-shifted TV, it’s wonderful to find a show that our entire family can relate to, and our entire family can watch: from my husband down to our little boy, our entire family laughs because the Pearsons — Bill Engvall’s on-screen family — is so much like us. (Or so I think.)
Lauren (Jennifer Lawrence) is the typical self-absorbed teenage daughter who demonstrates random acts of exceptional insight. Trent (Graham Patrick Martin), the long-haired underachieving son is, beneath that greasy surface, a truly sweet kid. And Bryan (Skyler Gisondo), the egg-headed obnoxious little genius, still occasionally shows that no matter how big the IQ a little boy is still a little boy.
And while my husband watches because he relates to Bill Pearson (Bill Engvall), I watch because I am, and always have been, a big fan of Nancy Travis (who plays Susan Pearson, the wife who somehow keeps this whole family sane). That’s right: I loved Becker, I still watch it in re-runs, and I’m not afraid to admit it. Besides, I like to think that I’m the sane one around here.
Not caught up on the series? No worries. The first season of the Bill Engvall show is already out on DVD.
