The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) says that a bad diet is to blame for Britney Spears’ erratic behavior. In particular, the group says her heavy consumption of meat and dairy products may have triggered her schizophrenic behavior and other mental health problems.
It’s a testament to the wildly varied interests of the folks in our Vegan Department that this was the very first thought that popped into their minds while they were skimming through the latest tabloid gossip about Britney’s exploits in the psych ward (she’s apparently been asking for ice cream).
So the organization wrote a letter to the pop star’s parents (pdf file) recommending they steer Britney clear of animal products like meat and her beloved ice cream. They even included a “Vegetarian Starter Kit” for Lynne and Jamie Spears’ convenience in making the transition.
While I’m personally a big fan of reduced meat- and dairy-consumption for health reasons, I can’t help but feel this move by PETA was not only over-the-top but extremely opportunistic. The organization’s letter even concedes that the correlation between consuming animal products and mental health issues is questionable at this time, which ultimately means PETA is simply using Britney’s situation to advance its own agenda.
Hopefully Britney’s parents filed PETA’s letter precisely where it belongs: in the trashcan along with other junk mail.

OMG… I hate PETA. You post more stories like that and I’ll seriously start feeling for the girl.
But really. I hate PETA.
