The irrepressible Tammy Faye Messner, who survived the scandal surrounding her televangelist former husband Jim Baker and later her own drug addiction, lost her battle to cancer Friday morning.
Tammy Faye had inoperable lung cancer and appeared last Thursday on Larry King Live to discuss her ordeal. Weighing a mere 65 pounds, and unable to swallow any food beyond chicken soup, the pint-sized praying woman retained her faith in God until the end.
After undergoing surgery for colon cancer in 2004, Tammy Faye learned the disease had spread to her lungs. In May 2007, doctors declared her illness was untreatable and incurable.
Larry King learned of Tammy Faye’s death on Friday but delayed the announcement at her family’s request. The family gathered following Tammy Faye’s cremation. She was interred in a remote part of Kansas near the Oklahoma border.
